Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a well-known and accepted procedure for women who want well shaped, fuller breasts. Because of many different factors, women of all ages and backgrounds have never been happy with their breasts. Pregnancy, weight loss, and other genetic malformations have caused many women to seek a better appearance.
Choosing the right size, shape and location of the implants is a very important part of the pre-operation preparation. Achieving a natural appearance and avoiding the obvious signs of augmentation are the primary focus of Dr. Self. Breast augmentation can help to restore confidence in personal and social lives.
Implant Size and Shape:Breast implants come in many sizes and are filled with saline or silicone gel. Silicone is available for all women over 22 years old. Implants can be found in round or anatomic (teardrop) shapes, but your breast measurements and size will most likely determine the type of implant you’ll need. The shells of the implants come in a textured or smooth surface. The location of the implant will often determine the type of shell used.
Incision Location:You may already know that the incisions used in breast augmentation can be in various places. There is the inframammary incision that goes beneath the breast where a new breast crease forms. The incision is well hidden and usually heals well. Implants can be inserted through an incision on the edge of the areola (peri-areolar). Also, the underarm (transaxillary approach) provides yet another approach. Each incision type has pros and cons and Dr. Self will explain them to you in detail during your consultation.
Implant Placement:The placement of the implant is also a very important decision. Implants can be placed below the chest muscle (submuscular ) or above the chest muscle underneath the breast tissue (subglandular). The placement will likely depend on your anatomical shape and desired result. Dr. Self has a goal to eliminate the obviously augmented look and will recommend placement based on several factors including your desired result.
Breast augmentation procedures generally take 60-90 minutes to complete. Incisions are specially placed to conceal them and minimize the scar. Saline implants require an incision about 1 inch in length through which the implant is placed. When the implant is securely placed, the incisions are sutured. Your breasts will be wrapped in a dressing and special surgical bra. During your consultation with Dr. Self, you will be well informed about augmentation along with a thorough examination. Your implant options – including type and size, incision location, and placement will be discussed as well. Dr. Self and his staff will be there throughout the process to guide you and provide support.
